Holiday Inn Resort-Buena Vista

This is a Disney Good Neighbor Hotel.

What is that you ask?

They are hotels which are located near Disney World that have passed a test of high standards approved by Disney World.

All Disney Good Neighbor hotels offer free shuttle service to Disney World. In fact, this is one of the criteria to become a Disney Good Neighbor hotel. The hotels also have to be close to Disney World.
They are required to have excellent customer service and the customer service agents must have great knowledge of Disney World to assist guests with any questions they might have.  Since most Disney World Good Neighbor hotels are not located on Disney World property, you should find their rates to be quite attractive.
If a hotel has the Disney Good Neighbor hotels logo outside then you can expect the hotel to be nice…at least to match the standards at one of Disney’s Value Properties.

We stayed a night at the Holiday Inn Resort and were pleasantly surprised. It is very clean and has a great pool area. There is also an arcade and a room that shows movies! It is situated in the heart of Lake Buena Vista and just one mile from the Walt Disney World® Theme Parks.
That being said I can see where it would be possibly more budget friendly to book one of the Good Neighbor Hotels but they do lack the “Disney nostalgia” and I really do recommend checking the Disney Value Resorts for rates first.

Merritt Island Kayaking

So we do LOVE our Kayaking adventures here in Florida….hey it’s good to do something different for a change!

I thought I would share the last time we went which was while we were visiting Cocoa Beach…

We went with a guided tour this time around called Calypso Kayaking.  It was the first time we took our boys who are 6 and 9.

I was a little worried on how they would do, the weather was a little cool and gloomy but they absolutely LOVED it!

It was good doing the actual tour also because the amount of information you get is priceless! The boys just soaked up all the knowledge!

We explored the Indian River Lagoon.

On the  guided kayak tours they say you may see Dolphins, Manatees, Birds, Islands, Mangroves and many other species of wildlife!

We saw all of the above and actually stopped at one of the islands to walk around and checked out some huge horse shoe crabs!

It was lots of fun and I do recommend it! It would work great as a side trip from Disney or a pre or post cruise excursion.

It is 70 miles from Disney and 9 miles from Cape Canaveral.

Here is their website….

Experience the natural beauty and diverse Ecosystem of the Cocoa Beach area. Just a short distance away from all Cocoa Beach Resorts, join us as we navigate through the river’s waterways and undergo an immediate activation of the senses. The sights and sounds made by nature and the excitement of your family and friends create what we call an “Unforgettable Kayaking Adventure”.

Legoland-Florida

Posted in FLORIDA ADVENTURES with tags , , on March 28, 2012 by disneychronicles

Legoland is Florida’s newest and most anticipated theme park addition. Located in Winter Haven (about 45 minutes south of Disney) on the grounds of the old Cypress Gardens, it is a brightly colored mecca for Lego lovers and fans.

We were finally able to go this past Monday.  I was a little worried with it being around spring break but when we pulled into the parking lot it was maybe 25% full! The park is only open from 930-500 and we arrived about 10am.  We didn’t have tickets but were able to walk right up to purchase them.

The park is a lot larger then I expected.  You need to do a little walking since the attractions are not right next to each other. And it IS truly a park for kids. The neat thing is they have play areas in the line que so a parent can wait in line and the kids play! I can imagine this would be great once they get very busy!

Building the park among the remains of the historic Cypress Gardens lends the park an elegance I wasn’t expecting. Ancient tall oaks shade the entire park. Pathways feel like they’ve been there for 80 years,The botanical gardens have kept the Cypress Gardens name, ensuring the legacy survives.

And walking the paths of the massive garden is absolutely jaw-dropping. I never would have imagined that they actually maintained the gardens so successfully, considering the park has been shuttered for so long. The humongous banyan tree is pretty amazing, even the kids were impressed! Simply unbelievable, and an incredible juxtaposition to the rest of the park.

Another great aspect (similar to Disney’s pin trading) is with the mini figures.  The employees have a unique badge with pieces to trade with guests. The boys being “avid” pin traders loved this! They only wished they had brought some more from home! But no worries there are plenty of places to buy them! as I’m sure you can imagine!

Now onto the rides…

Legoland has four roller coasters and all are great for kids. The height restrictions are minimal: 36″ to 44″ will get you on all the rides.

The Dragon is an easy coaster, full of knights, castles, and of course, dragons.

The Coastersaurus is an old wooden coaster refurbished from Cypress Garden days.  It’s bumpy and a bit different, but fun.

Test Track is a short, swervy ride, but it was the steepest and fastest — a 45 foot drop before you hit the switchbacks — but still okay for most kids.

Flying School is a suspended coaster (meaning you hang from the top) where kids and adults can get the feel of flying without the fear like other suspended coasters (such as Sea World’s Manta).  It may look a little daunting, but it’s an easy thrill.

I think the one thing that I was really amazed by was the mini city replicas of Florida landmarks such as Kennedy Space Center, Daytona 500, Key West, South Beach, and other locations such as Las Vegas or Washington DC. My pictures absolutely can not show how cool this is! the detail and pure creativity of this is worth coming to see in itself.

Overall I feel that it is a good park.  It is targeted at younger children and for sure a Lego Lover’s DREAM!  In my opinion though it cannot be compared to Disney…it lacks the nostalgia….I think that it unfairly is. It is really just a totally different attraction.

Do I think you should go..Yes!

Four Points Sheraton-Cocoa Beach

Posted in DISNEY CRUISE LINE, FLORIDA ADVENTURES, FLORIDA BEACHES with tags , on March 9, 2012 by disneychronicles

So I had a chance to stay at the Four Points Sheraton in Cocoa Beach.  This is a “FUN” hotel for sure! The theme is awesome! It is a plethora of surfboards, surf shops & memorabilia. While it is not beachfront it is very close to the beach literally you walk towards the back of the hotel and your there. This is also great for  a Pre or Post cruise hotel or a break from the parks and a day at the beach.

This hotel is in the heart of the action in Cocoa Beach.  Directly across the side road is Ron Jon’s Surf Shop. This isn’t your typical hotel from the outside.  Positioned close to the street, the front is decorated with large fountains and ponds, several large surfboards, lots of plants and sport themed photos. The bright colors make it stand out and you just think FUN!

The entrance is around the back where you’ll also find a multi-story parking garage that serves the retail businesses and the hotel. Also for those needing to know YES there is a Starbucks inside. The exterior was well maintained and clean, although the pool area could use a refresh. It is outside by the garage and very small. You could easily miss it if you weren’t looking for it. Overall it was a fun stay and I would recommend it!
