I have been wanting to go to this for years and finally made it there Saturday!

We attended the Family parade they do an “Adults” one a week later.

The Gasparilla Pirate Invasion and Parade has been a Tampa tradition for over 100 years.

How did it start?

It all started with the legend of a fortune in buried treasure left somewhere along the Florida coast by Jose Gaspar when he died. Although that treasure has never been found…..

(hmmmmmm) 🙂

the story of the swashbuckler was unearthed and his memory revived in 1904 when Tampa’s social and civic leaders adopted the pirate as patron rogue of their city-wide celebration.

Forty original members of the first “Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla” met in secret and planned a surprise mock pirate attack on Tampa. In full regalia — masked and fully-costumed — the first krewe arrived on horseback to “capture the city” during the Festival Parade. Surprisingly, the first invasion was so successful that a city-wide demand lead to making the Mystic Krewe organization permanent. A tradition was born.

To celebrate their capture of the City of Tampa, the Captain and his Krewe share their wealth – throwing  glittering beads, candy and treasures along the 3.8-mile parade route.

“Make way, mateys!” shout Tampa’s original buccaneers as they wind their way down historic Bayshore Boulevard and into downtown Tampa – amidst colorful costumes and festive music.

The Gasparilla Parade features over 130 units – including more than 90 floats and  14 marching bands!

Vendors are also located up and down Bayshore Boulevard and you can’t miss the finale of fireworks at the end!

Today, over 400,000 attend the event, which contributes over $20 million to the local economy! and it is a great time!

A Walt Disney World “urban explorer” has been banned from the park – for life.

The “explorer,” who goes by the name “Adam The Woo,”  gained an online following by posting videos of himself sneaking into backstage areas of the Magic Kingdom off limits to the public.

Adam told Fox 4 in November he’s a fan of Disney and wanted to see what was backstage to satisfy a “morbid curiosity.”

On his YouTube channel, he has a dozen videos of himself “exploring” Disney World.  The park considers what he did trespassing.

In his latest video, Adam, who is wearing a black Mickey Mouse T-shirt, says he’s “had better days” since he was met by security on his latest visit to the happiest place on earth and banned for life.

“I never received any emails from Disney on what I was doing was wrong,” said Adam in his YouTube video. “So, I figured maybe I’ll get a slap on the wrist, they’ll talk about the videos, say ‘don’t do it anymore,’ all that good stuff. None of that happened. They were waiting at the gate and they got me.”

Adam, who is upset about the ban, claims the security guards that got him were actually fans of his videos.

A spokeswoman for Disney World tells Fox 4 they take matters like this seriously and filed a trespass warning against Adam because he “deliberately entered unauthorized areas” several times before.

Disney statement

“We take matters like this seriously and filed a trespass warning against him since he deliberately entered unauthorized areas on several occasions.”

The most un-appreciated attraction at Walt Disney World….

or so I’ve been told!

I simply do not agree! What am I talking about here?

Tom Sawyer Island!

It’s not all that high tech….can’t really compare it to Star Tours but it does have its own appeal!

Yes, you do have to walk…alot and explore, find caves and use your imagination! Just like the “old” days!

The attraction can only be accessed by raft and closes at dusk so plan accordingly!  This is a great place to unwind. There are plenty of places to sit and gaze across the river at the Magic Kingdom…with all its hustle and bustle!

It is also a great place to take the kids for some quiet time, you may for a minute forget where you actually are!

Watch Yourself! Especially on Vacation!

Due to recent events at the Magic Kingdom involving a law suit (according to Tampa Bay times) I decided to write about this to remind everyone to use common sense and pay attention to what is around you especially when on vacation!

It is easy to get side tracked with all the crowds, commotion and keeping track of your kids! (and sometimes husbands) 😀

A guest was attempting to disembark the Jungle Cruise ride when another boat full of passengers rammed into the back of her boat, causing her to be thrown backward. Her daughter slammed into her father’s chest. A Disney cast member was also injured, the suit says.  The guest was taken to a hospital and, as a result of neck and spinal injuries, has been unable to work.

She also states that the accident left a frightening impression on her daughter. She said she and her family were longtime annual pass holders and had visited Disney World hundreds of times in the past several years. “Disney was a place we celebrated many milestones. It was my daughter’s favorite but watching her mom being carted away in an ambulance was devastating to her.  She doesn’t want to go back.”

The suit filed Friday seeks damages in excess of $15,000, but her attorney said treatment for her injuries will cost “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” A jury trial is sought.

ok, So I think we all go to Disney World with a sense of security and this is a strong reminder that we still have to be smart and conscious of what happens around us.  There is reason for the announcements, safety precautions and rules that are meant to be followed. I by no means am making any judgement in this lawsuit, the article just merely made me think of things we sometimes take for granted.

The Jungle Cruise simulates a riverboat cruise down rivers of Asia, Africa and South America. Guests board 1930s-style tramp steamers and go on a voyage past animatronic jungle animals. The attraction opened in the Magic Kingdom in 1977.

The tour is led by a live Disney cast member delivering a humorous scripted narration. It is a slow rather relaxing ride and funny if you get  a good cast member! We ride it often! so go out there! enjoy yourself but pay attention!
